Who Are We?

We are part of a fellowship of some 5500 independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ around the world. We are the non-denominational denomination. That being said, we are an independent congregation, with elected elders under the ultimate authority of Christ as head of the Church. Our “creed” is Christ and our goal is to please Him with our lives. Our church absolutely belongs to Him and we take our direction from the bible as it is written. Everything we do is meant to bring glory to God, so that people will know Him just like we know Him. Everything we believe about God comes from the bible. Whether you have never read the scriptures before, or are a long time believer, we have a place for you here. We desire to know God, through Christ, and experience the power of His Spirit in our lives.

 What Do We Believe?

We Believe in God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit and that they are distinct personalities with distinct roles, but one God. And that One God is the Creator of the universe. We Believe Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Savior, the Son of God who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, and was raised from the grave. He will return as our victorious Lord. We Believe our salvation comes only through Jesus Christ and cannot be earned. It is a gift of God. We Believe faith in Jesus requires repentance, confession of that faith before witnesses, and obedience to His Word.

Baptism by immersion demonstrates our faith and obedience while it depicts our union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. We Believe everyone who accepts Christ has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who acts as a Comforter, Guide and Advocate. We Believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God in its entirety and that it does not contradict itself. It is our guide. We Believe the Church, as the body of Christ, is the extension of Jesus Christ’s character, attitude, behaviour, and mission in our world today. We Believe God gives gifts to both men and women through the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the church’s ministry. We Believe that humility in prayer is the foundation for all we do and that celebrating communion together weekly is beneficial for all Christians.

Our Staff

mikeOur preaching minister is Mike Burns, Born in Fredericton NB in the last century. His early years were filled with sports of every kind, you name it he played it. With the attention span of a beagle he would find himself where ever the most interesting things were happening. This was both bad and good. Bad in that he tended to find himself in some sort of trouble but good in that he now has a great deal of interesting stories to tell.

His mom played the largest part in his hearing about Christ. She would haul him to church and Sunday School every week to give him every opportunity to hear about Christ. At the age of 21 he was baptized into Christ at Central Christian Church, in Charlottetown while he was studying at Maritime Christian College. Three years later he was married to his wife Jana, and the two of them have a daughter.

Mike has worked in ministry since 1992 where he started as a part time youth minister, then for a short time he served as full time preacher with Montague Church of Christ. He has been with Cornwall Christian Church since 2003.

If it could be said that Mike had a favorite verse it would be Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Our worship minister Portable Network Graphics image-2DD618655203-1David Marshall, originally hails from Digby, Nova Scotia but moved to PEI in 2001 to pursue his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Maritime Christian College. David was raised by Christian parents and the church has always been a big part of his life. He spent most of his younger years singing and playing instruments in the local church and really developed a love, not only for the local church, but for the ministry of worship as well. Music has always been such a big part of David’s life and he loves to have the opportunity to play and sing his heart out for God.

When David is leading the congregation in worship he, first and foremost, immerses himself in worship. When that happens people really sense God’s presence and they come and join in. There is nothing quite like having that genuine experience with God and with other people, it is amazing. He strives to bring people closer to Christ through the worship services at Cornwall Christian and he desires to lead people to a more authentic and intimate relationship with their creator.

David currently resides in Cornwall with his Wife Anna and his three sons, Cooper, Hudson and Oliver. They are also loved by their Yellow Labrador, Bella. One of David’s favourite passages from the Bible is Psalm 91:14-16:

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

maggieOur Childrens’ Minister and Office Administrator is Megan Davies. She is a recent graduate of Maritime Christian College with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible. She has been actively working with youth and children since 2012 while leading a youth ministry at Central Christian Church and as staff at Canoe Cove Christian Camp. She has been serving with Cornwall since 2013 in various roles.

Megan’s passion is to teach children about the love that Christ has for them, and to show them what a relationship with Jesus looks like. She believes that leading by example is key in a child’s life; monkey see, monkey do. If children are to live a life dedicated to living out God’s will then they need to see lives dedicated to living out God’s will. It is her desire that the children of Cornwall Christian Church will grow up surrounded by people that love and care for them, and will come alongside them as they seek to find their identities in Christ so that one day, they will become the leaders and servants of the church, impacting more lives for Christ then we ever could have imagined!

One of Megan’s favourite bible verses is 1 John 4:10, “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.”

Our Elders

donjDon Jardine
Don grew up on a family farm in Freetown, PEI and learned at an early age that all people are valuable in God’s eyes and Christian values are important to finding fulfillment in life.
In his professional career he worked for over 30 years in the environmental field with the Province of Prince Edward Island. He currently is the Principal of DE Jardine Consulting of Winsloe South, environmental consultant and also works part time with the UPEI Climate Research Lab on climate related issues.
He and his wife, Ann were charter members of Cornwall Christian Church when it began meeting at Cornwall in 1980. He later became an elder of the church and has served in this role for nearly 30 years.
The eldership role is critical in the New Testament church as set out in the Bible. As a Shepherd of God’s flock an elder must be a good example, care for those in need, be a good listener, reach out to those who are seeking God’s calling, helping them to achieve what God wants in their life, and helping them avoid what is unacceptable to Him. This can be summarized in our Vision statement: Loving Christ, Serving Others, and Changing Our World.

One of our elders, Derek, derek huestis is a Senior Manager with the Summerside accounting office of BDO Canada LLP. He has been engaged in public accounting for 28 years; 23 years as a partner in a local accounting firm and the last 5 years as a Senior Manager for BDO Canada LLP. Prior to that he was employed by Business Development Bank of Canada for eleven years where he gained experience in commercial lending, strategic planning, and business planning.

Derek has contributed several years of service to the accounting profession at the provincial, regional and national level. In addition to that he currently serves as Elder and Chair of the Finance Committee at Cornwall Christian Church, and sits on a number of boards including Indian River Festival Association Inc., F.A.M.E. Canada Inc., Neptune Estates Inc., and Wilmot Valley Cemetery Inc.

The style of eldership that I try to embrace is to deal with the whole person, mind, body and soul. You can’t effectively preach Christ to someone while ignoring their physical and mental needs. It is extremely important to visit and spend time with those who are suffering in any way. Nothing speaks louder than demonstrating Christ’s love to others. For only when people see Christ’s love in us will they be open to hearing about the source of that love.

ben Ben Foreman, one of our elders, lives in Cornwall with his wife Jacquelyn and four children, Jovie, Easton, Paisley and Turner. Ben grew up in the Burtt’s Corner Church of Christ and graduated from Maritime Christian College (MCC) with a BA (Bible) in 2006. Since then he has served in pulpit ministry as well as administration at MCC. Ben has a Master’s Degree from Lincoln Christian University in Organization Leadership (2014). Ben has a passion for God’s word, leadership and mentorship. He is a fan of the Maple Leafs and Blue Jays and loves to go to the beach. Ben believes everyone needs a year of bible college.
